Criteria for Production Manager Roundtables

Overall Goal: Advance the Production Manager role from fire fighter to a true manager of people and systems.

Definitions:

  1. Production Manager – A person that manages the production department of a remodeling company. In general, they manage the people and the systems of production, not the day to day work on job sites. Among their basic responsibilities are hiring, training, firing personnel, managing the financial success of the department, managing customer satisfaction through their direct reports, and managing the systems that allow jobs to move freely from sales through the completion of the jobs. In general they spend 90% of their time in the office and 10% in the field for job site visits.
  2. Project Manager – A person that is directly responsible for managing jobs on a day to day basis. Typically they use a number of sub contractors as site labor but may have some in-house labor. They spend 80% of their time in the field and 20% in the office.

General criteria to qualify for Production Manager Roundtables:

  1. Company must be at a level where the Production Manager is not involved in day-to-day management of the job sites but whose primary responsibilities are managing people and systems.
    1. Or the company goal is to have that in place within six months. Both owner and PM must be on board with this goal and have a plan to reach it.
  2. Indicators:
    1. 90% of time is in the office 10% for job site visits to manage the people, not the job.
    2. Has more than 2 direct reports:
      1. These direct reports are in the field full time, managing the jobs not simply labor.
      2. If the company has primarily a trade contractor based labor pool there must be at least one Project Manager in the field with direct report to the Production Manager
    3. Has direct control of production personnel:
      1. Involved in hiring
      2. Controls placement on jobs
      3. Responsible for training
      4. Has free, unrestricted access to job based financials including Job Cost reports, WIP, etc.
